West Commercial St Storm Drain Project
West Commercial Street Storm Drain Project to Resume on Monday, June 21
PORTLAND, Maine -- Beginning Monday, June 21, 2021, The City’s contractor, Gorham Sand and Gravel will return to the work site to complete final pavement repairs associated with the West Commercial Street Storm Drain project. It is anticipated that this final cleanup work will last four days. As a reminder, the project work zone will be located on West Commercial Street between Cassidy Point Drive and the Casco Bay Bridge. A majority of the project was completed last fall to alleviate flooding which had been occurring regularly within this section of West Commercial Street due to a collapsed storm drain pipe.
IMPORTANT INFO FOR MOTORISTS: Project work next week will run from 7:00am to 7:00pm. For a majority of the work, the contractor will be implementing a traffic lane shift to move traffic around the work zone. The lane shift will allow traffic to remain flowing in both directions during the work day. The contractor will be constructing a temporary gravel road extension as part of the lane shift. This will allow two 12’ wide travel lanes to remain open. Motorists are urged to drive slowly through this area. There may be times throughout the week when the contractor will be required to reduce the travel way to flagger controlled alternating one way traffic (stop and go). This will only be allowed during non-peak traffic hours (9:00am-3:00pm). Please use caution driving through the work zone to help keep the crews and other vehicles safe during the project.
SEEK ALTERNATE ROUTE, IF POSSIBLE, TO AVOID DELAYS
Motorists will encounter traffic delays when driving through the work zone and are urged, if possible, to seek alternate routes into and around this area during the project.
December 15, 2020: Project work is now substantially completed. All of the storm drain infrastructure has been completed on time and within the project budget. The only work that remains in the spring of 2021 is final repairs to pavement trenches in W. Commercial Street.
Over the past year West Commercial Street between Cassidy Point Drive and the Casco Bay Bridge has been shut down at least 5 times due to street flooding. The street flooding is the result of a 100 year old vitrified clay pipe which has collapsed. This project will construct a new storm drain system in West Commercial Street and tie into an existing drainage outflow line approximately 500' to the west of the low point in the street with the intent of mitigating the flooding.
In order to mitigate the flooding the contractor will install 720 feet of new storm drain pipe ranging from 10 inches to 30 inches in diameter. Along with the new pipe, the contractor will also install 4 new precast concrete catch basin inlet structures to help capture the water and convey it from the street to the new storm drain piping system. The new storm drain pipe system will connect to an existing Portland Water District Combined Sewer outflow line, which will convey the water to Portland Harbor.
